Wallpaper Removal Questions
Can you just paint over wallpaper instead of removing it?
It is possible in limited situations, but it is usually a mistake. Paint introduces moisture that can loosen the paper, seams telegraph through the finish, and any texture in the paper stays visible forever. It also makes proper removal much harder later. We will only recommend it where removal would genuinely damage the wall beneath.
What if the wallpaper was hung on unprimed drywall?
This is the difficult scenario. Without a primer or sizing between paper and drywall, the adhesive bonds directly to the paper facing of the board — so removing the wallpaper tears the drywall surface with it. The wall then needs skimming to restore a paintable surface. It is fixable, it just needs to be priced honestly rather than discovered halfway.
How long does removal take?
Enormously variable. Well-hung paper on a properly prepared wall can come off in large sheets in a matter of hours. Layered, painted-over or badly adhered paper can take days for the same room. That is why we always want to see it, and often test a small area, before quoting.
Will the walls need repair afterwards?
Usually some. Even a clean removal leaves adhesive residue and minor surface damage, and older walls often hide previous repairs under the paper. Expect washing down, patching and priming as part of the job. A wall that has just had paper removed is not yet a wall that is ready to paint.
Can you remove wallpaper from plaster walls?
Yes, and plaster often behaves better than drywall because it does not tear. The risk with plaster is different — excess water can soften old plaster or cause it to release from the lath. It calls for controlled moisture and patience rather than soaking the wall.
What about borders, or several layers of paper?
Both are common in older homes and both add time. Multiple layers have to come off in stages, and each layer may have a different adhesive. Borders are often stuck over already-painted walls with a stronger adhesive and can be surprisingly stubborn for such a small area.
How messy is the process?
Wet and sticky rather than dusty. There is water, softened paper and adhesive residue, so floors and any remaining furniture are fully protected and debris is bagged as we go. The room is left clean each day, though it will not be usable while the walls are drying between stages.
Can all the old glue really be removed?
It has to be. Residual adhesive left on the wall will reactivate under fresh paint and show as shiny patches, streaks or bubbling weeks later. The walls get washed down thoroughly and checked before priming. This step is invisible in the finished room and it is exactly where corners get cut.
Is vinyl or textured wallpaper harder to remove?
Vinyl is often easier in one respect — the top layer frequently peels away in sheets, leaving the paper backing to be soaked off separately. Heavily textured and embossed papers are more work because the surface resists moisture penetration and has to be scored first without damaging the wall underneath.
What if the wallpaper simply will not come off?
There is a point on some walls where continuing to fight the paper does more damage than working with it. In those cases the practical answer can be to stabilise and seal what remains, then skim the wall to a smooth finish. It is not the first choice, but it produces a better wall than tearing the surface apart.
