Popcorn Ceiling Removal in Albany & the Capital Region
Textured "popcorn" ceilings date a home, trap dust, and cast harsh shadows. At NS Painting & Contracting, we remove them and finish them perfectly smooth for homeowners across Albany, Saratoga, Schenectady, and Rensselaer counties. We seal the room, scrape with controlled hydration to limit dust, repair and skim-coat the bare ceiling to a Level 5 finish, then prime and repaint — leaving you with a clean, modern, flawless ceiling.
Important for older homes: textured ceilings installed before about 1980 can contain asbestos. We guide you through proper testing before any work begins — your family's safety comes first. Call (518) 246-5513 for a free, no-obligation assessment.

Our Signature 7-Step Popcorn Ceiling Removal Workflow
We have refined our ceiling restoration process over 20 years to ensure absolute property protection and a flawless finish in the Capital Region.
Safety & Testing Consultation: For homes built before 1980, we guide you through proper asbestos testing before any work begins to ensure absolute safety for your family.
Total Room Encapsulation: We mask floors and drape 3-mil plastic sheeting from the crown molding down to the baseboards to create a completely sealed, dust-proof containment zone.
Controlled Hydration: We lightly mist the ceiling with a specialized water solution to break down the adhesive bond of the acoustic texture while minimizing airborne dust.
Precision Scraping: Using wide-blade finishing knives, our experts carefully peel away the softened popcorn texture, catching the heavy wet debris in the plastic below.
Seam & Screw Repair: We inspect the newly exposed drywall, re-taping failing seams and sinking/mudding any exposed drywall screws that the popcorn was hiding.
Level 5 Skim Coating & Sanding: We trowel a continuous layer of joint compound over the entire ceiling and use vacuum-assisted HEPA sanders to polish it to a perfectly smooth finish.
PVA Priming & Cleanup: We seal the fresh drywall compound with a high-build PVA primer, leaving your new smooth ceiling perfectly ready for topcoat paint while rolling up the plastic containment to leave your room spotless.
The "NS Painting" Difference: Why DIY Ceiling Removal is a Mistake
- Scraping a ceiling sounds simple until you realize the massive mess, the potential for severe drywall damage, and the hidden complexities of unfinished ceilings. We operate at a higher standard. We achieve a 10/10 smooth ceiling transformation by utilizing heavy-duty containment, safe moisture-release methods, and master-level skim coating.
- Advanced Dust Containment: We don’t let acoustic dust ruin your home. We encapsulate the entire room with heavy-duty plastic sheeting—covering the walls and floors completely—creating a sealed workspace to protect your HVAC system and living areas.
- Damage-Free Hydration Scraping: Dry scraping creates massive dust clouds and gouges the ceiling. We use a specialized hydration method to safely soften the popcorn texture, allowing it to glide off without damaging the fragile drywall paper underneath.
- Flawless Level 5 Skim Coating: Removing the popcorn is only the first step; the bare ceiling underneath is never paint-ready. Because we are master painters and drywall experts, we apply a full “Level 5” skim coat of joint compound to create an absolute mirror-smooth surface before priming.
2026 Ceiling Design Trends for New York Homes
Based on our recent interior renovations across Clifton Park and Saratoga Springs, here is what local homeowners are prioritizing:
The “Invisible” Ceiling: The demand for perfectly flat, non-textured ceilings is at an all-time high. A smooth, Level 5 finish allows the architecture and decor of the room to stand out without distraction above.
Ultra-Flat, High-Reflectance Paint: Once the popcorn is gone, homeowners are opting for specialized “ultra-flat” ceiling paints that hide microscopic imperfections and bounce maximum natural light into the living space.
Crown Molding Integration: Removing the bumpy popcorn texture finally creates the crisp, 90-degree corner needed to install elegant interior trim and crown molding a highly requested add-on during our ceiling restorations.

FAQ
Popcorn Ceiling Removal Questions
Could my popcorn ceiling contain asbestos?
It is possible in older homes. Textured ceiling products containing asbestos were used for decades, and you cannot tell by looking. If your ceiling predates the ban, the responsible step is testing by a qualified lab before anything is disturbed. If a test comes back positive, removal is specialist abatement work and we will tell you so rather than proceed.
How messy is popcorn removal?
It is one of the messiest jobs in the trade, which is why containment is most of the work. Floors and walls get fully sheeted, doorways sealed, and fixtures protected before anything is scraped. Done properly the mess stays entirely inside the room; done carelessly it goes through the whole house.
Is the ceiling smooth straight after scraping?
No — scraping is only the first step. Underneath you find the original taping, which was often finished roughly because it was always going to be covered. That surface then needs skimming, sanding and priming to become a proper smooth ceiling. Anyone quoting scraping alone is quoting half a job.
My popcorn ceiling has been painted over. Does that matter?
Yes, quite a lot. Unpainted texture softens with water and comes off relatively cleanly. Painted texture resists water, so it has to be worked off dry or in sections, which is slower and harder on the surface beneath. It is still very doable, but it changes the time and therefore the price.
Do I need to move out while it is done?
Usually not. We work room by room with the area sealed off, so the rest of the house stays livable. Whole-house projects are more disruptive and some families prefer to be away for the heaviest days. We will be straight with you about which days are the messy ones.
Can you skim over the texture instead of scraping it off?
Sometimes. On a lightly textured, sound ceiling, skimming over the top can give a smooth result with far less mess. On a heavy or loose texture it is not viable — the weight and the poor bond underneath will cause problems. We will look at yours and tell you which approach actually suits it.
How long does one room take?
Typically several days for an average room, because the sequence is protect, scrape, repair, skim, sand, prime and paint — with drying time between the compound coats. The scraping itself is often the shortest part. Multiple rooms overlap efficiently since one can be drying while another is being worked.
What if there is damage hidden under the texture?
It happens — old water stains, failed seams, cracked plaster. Texture hides a lot. If we uncover something, we stop and show you before carrying on, with the cost of putting it right explained clearly. Nobody enjoys a surprise mid-project, so we would rather have the conversation than absorb it silently into the finish.
Can you do just one room, or does it have to be the whole house?
One room is fine and very common — people often start with a living room or main bedroom. Be aware that a smooth ceiling next to a textured one is a noticeable contrast, particularly in open-plan spaces, so it is worth thinking about where the natural stopping point is.
Is removing it worth doing before selling?
Popcorn ceilings read as dated to most buyers and are one of the first things mentioned in listings. Whether the return justifies the cost depends on your market and the rest of the house. If you are already painting before a sale, doing the ceilings at the same time is far more efficient than coming back to it later.
