Our Signature 7-Step Drywall And Taping Workflow
We have refined our wall preparation process over 20 years to ensure flawless structural integrity in the Albany market.
- Structural Assessment: We inspect the framing or existing wall structure to ensure a solid, flat foundation before any new sheetrock is hung or repaired.
- Precision Cutting & Hanging: We measure, cut, and install drywall panels with exact tolerances, minimizing gaps and maximizing the structural strength of the wall.
- Pre-filling & Taping: We pre-fill large gaps with a quick-setting compound, then apply professional drywall tape to all seams and internal corners to prevent future cracking.
- Multi-Coat Mudding: We apply three successive coats of joint compound (the “bed,” the “fill,” and the “skim”), widening the application each time to feather out the seams seamlessly.
- Vacuum-Assisted Sanding: Using HEPA dust-extracting sanders and fine-grit sponges, we polish the compound to a perfectly smooth transition with the surrounding drywall paper.
- High-Lumen Inspection: We shine high-intensity halogen work lights parallel to the wall to expose and correct even the most microscopic ridges or pinholes.
- PVA Priming & Cleanup: We seal the fresh drywall and taping compound with a high-quality PVA primer, readying it for topcoat paint while leaving your space spotless.
The "NS Painting" Difference: Why Our Drywall And Taping Stands Out
Most standard contractors rush the mudding process, leaving visible seams, “flashing,” and sanding marks that show up as soon as the paint dries. We don’t. To achieve a 10/10 result, we utilize professional-grade joint compounds and meticulous sanding techniques to create a completely seamless surface.
Flawless Seam Concealment: We use high-tensile drywall tape bedded in premium joint compound, applying multiple perfectly feathered trowel coats. We ensure that every joint, corner bead, and screw head is completely invisible to both the eye and the touch.
Advanced Dust Control: Drywall sanding is notoriously messy. We utilize specialized vacuum-assisted sanding equipment and heavy-duty 3M masking to capture airborne dust at the source, keeping your home clean and breathable during the taping process.
Level 5 Finish Capabilities: For walls receiving harsh, direct natural light or high-gloss paints, we offer a true “Level 5” finish. This involves applying a highly specialized skim coat over the entire wall surface to equalize texture, creating an absolute mirror-smooth canvas.
2026 Drywall & Wall-Finish Trends for New York Homes
Based on our recent interior remodels in Clifton Park and Saratoga Springs, here is what local homeowners are prioritizing for their walls:
The “Level 5” Skim Coat: With the rising popularity of stark, minimalist lighting and satin-finish paints, homeowners are demanding the ultra-premium, entirely skim-coated “Level 5” finish to eliminate all standard drywall paper texture.
Square Corner Bead: Moving away from the rounded “bullnose” corners of the early 2000s, modern interior designs heavily favor sharp, crisp, 90-degree square corner beads for a cleaner, architectural aesthetic.
Acoustic Dampening: For home offices and media rooms, we are frequently installing acoustic sealant and double-layered drywall to drastically reduce noise transfer between rooms.

FAQ
Drywall & Taping Questions
What are drywall finish levels and which one do I need?
Finishes are graded from basic taping up to a fully smooth surface. Most living spaces are finished to a standard that looks flawless under normal lighting. Rooms with large windows, spotlights or dark paint show every imperfection, so those need a higher level of finish. We will ask about lighting and paint sheen before deciding, because those two things determine what the wall needs to be.
Can you match my existing wall or ceiling texture?
Usually, yes. Knockdown, orange peel and hand-applied textures can all be reproduced closely enough that a repair disappears once painted. Very old hand-troweled plaster finishes are the hardest to match invisibly. We test on the repair itself and adjust before committing to the whole area.
I have a crack that keeps coming back. Can that be fixed permanently?
A recurring crack means something is moving — settlement, seasonal expansion, or a joint that was never properly reinforced. Filling it again will get the same result. The fix is to open it up, reinforce it correctly, and in some cases use a flexible detail so the movement is absorbed rather than transmitted into the surface.
Do you repair plaster as well as drywall?
Yes, and a lot of Capital Region housing stock is plaster rather than drywall. Plaster fails differently — it delaminates from the lath, cracks in long lines, and crumbles at the edges. It needs to be re-anchored and rebuilt rather than simply skimmed. Patching plaster like drywall is why so many repairs fail within a year.
How much dust will this create in my house?
Sanding compound produces a very fine dust that travels, so containment matters more than cleanup. We seal the work area, protect floors and pathways, and use dust control while sanding. Expect some dust in the immediate area; you should not be finding it in other rooms a week later.
Can you fix a water-damaged ceiling?
Yes, once the leak itself is fixed and the area is properly dry. Painting or patching over damp material traps moisture and the stain will bleed back through. We will check the affected material, cut back what is compromised, and use a stain-blocking primer so the mark does not reappear.
How long after a repair can it be painted?
Joint compound needs to dry fully between coats and before painting — normally a day or so per coat depending on thickness, humidity and airflow. Rushing it causes shrinkage cracks and flashing where the repair shows through the paint. On a multi-coat repair this is usually what sets the schedule, not the labour.
Do you fix nail pops and visible seams?
Yes. Nail pops are usually the fastener backing out as framing dries and moves, so simply filling the bump does not solve it — the fastener needs re-securing first. Visible seams mean the original taping was too thin or feathered too tightly, and they are corrected by rebuilding the joint properly.
Is there a minimum job size, or will you do one small hole?
Small repairs are welcome, though a single patch still involves multiple visits because of drying time between coats. Many customers bundle small repairs with a repaint, which is more efficient and means everything is finished and painted in one go rather than leaving a patched wall waiting.
Why does my new drywall look wavy in certain light?
That is almost always the finish level rather than the drywall itself. Light raking across a wall from a window or downlight exaggerates every joint and any variation in the compound. The fix is a higher level of finish — a broader skim that flattens the surface — and sometimes a lower-sheen paint that reflects less.
